Design and function of a snatch block

A snatch block pulley consists of a pulley with a semicircular trough for rope reception or rope guidance, which is rotatably connected to a deflection point - such as a hook with a safety device or an eye. One side part of the rope pulley can be opened to allow the rope to be inserted. The snatch block for a cable winch is then hooked or fastened to a stable point. This suspension point must be able to take the planned load and have additional reserves for any peak loads that may occur. Now the winch cable can be attached to the load to be pulled with an appropriate force-reinforcing angle to the winch.

Use of a winch pulley or rope pulley with hook

In case that a heavy load overstrains the winch, the cable of the winch can easily be deflected up to 180 degrees with a rope pulley. With 180 degrees of deflection, a hydraulic or electric winch has twice the pulling force.

During the pulling process, there is often an unavoidable diagonal pull between the load to be pulled and the winch. This unnecessarily stresses the steel cable as well as the winch. By using a snatch block, you can ensure that the angle of the rope entry onto the drum of the winch is optimised. The combined use of several pulleys, e.g. for complex recovery operations, is also possible. Our snatch block pulleys are compact, powerful, easy to store and have a handy weight.

Snatch blocks for forestry winches

In the field of forestry, our forestry snatch blocks for forestry winches with hooks are indispensable. Forestry cable winches have to master difficult operating situations. Fallen trees often cannot be pulled in a straight line by the forestry winch. This may be due to the location of the vehicle with the forestry winch or the position of the long timber in the forest. With our forestry pulleys, the cable guide can be controlled so that the timber can be pulled safely by the cable winch. We also offer snatch blocks for forestry winches in various designs without hooks on request.

Pulleys for winches on recovery vehicles

For recovery and towing, we have tried and tested snatch block pulleys that make the daily work of recovery much easier. The pulleys are either mounted on the recovery vehicle or fixed outside the vehicle for the desired rope deflection.

IMPORTANT FEATURES OF A PULLEY FOR ROPE WINCHES

We distinguish between the following features in the designs of our pulleys for rope winches:

  • With rotating snap hook: These snatch blocks made of sturdy high-strength metal are universally applicable. They have a rotating hook and can be opened to insert the winch rope.
  • With additional plug-in base: This version is attached directly to the recovery vehicle. It ensures a straight rope entry onto the winch.
  • With double pin: This pulley can deflect the cable horizontally and vertically. The required holders are mounted on the recovery vehicle. This allows the pulley to be inserted into the desired holding point on the vehicle.
  • With eye suspension: This version can be used by means of shackles, hooks or pulled-through lifting accessories.
  • Recovery appliance: This version was specially developed for flatbed towing vehicles. It is also used here for deflecting the winch rope.

WHEN USING SNATCH BLOCKS FOR STEEL CABLES, THE FOLLOWING POINTS MUST BE OBSERVED:

If the winch rope is deflected by 180 degrees, the pulley must be able to take twice the load of the pulling force of the winch. I.e. if the winch can pull a maximum of 3 tonnes, the pulley is then loaded with 6 tonnes. It must be approved for this tractive force. Our pulleys have a 4-fold breaking load for maximum safety. The diameter of the pulleys should be 15 times the rope diameter. A smaller ratio increases the wear of the winch rope. The existing load hook must have a safety device to prevent unhooking.

Snatch block with hook

These snatch blocks are probably the most commonly used rope blocks. You need a stable attachment point for the hook, as the pulley has to take twice the pulling force of the winch in the maximum case. The attachment point of the snatch block load does not have to be on the recovery vehicle used. A stable tree or a concrete pillar, for example, can also be used. It is grasped with an appropriately dimensioned sling into which the hook is attached. This snatch block pulley is also very popular for off-road use.

ProLux snatch blocks, also called snatch block pulleys, are an indispensable accessory for rope winches. They can double the pulling force of a winch and change the pulling direction. Thus, in case of unavoidable diagonal pull, the snatch block ensures a clean and straight winding of the rope onto the winch drum. A variety of versions with a wide range of permissible pulling forces help with many difficult applications.
