Wheel chocks
Wheel chocks prevent parked vehicles and car or truck trailers from moving unintentionally. Metal, plastic or rubber wheel chocks are pushed under the tyres. Chocks are made of non-slip material in a sturdy design to give the best possible protection against wheel movement in a parked vehicle. We offer the best selection of wheel chocks and matching holders in various sizes and designs at great prices.
What is a wheel chock and when are wheel chocks required?
Wheel chocks are wedge-shaped objects made of plastic, metal or other materials. Rubber wheel chocks are also available, as are heavy duty wheel chocks for trucks. They have outstanding non-slip properties and excellent stability. ProLux wheel chocks block one or more wheels to prevent parked vehicles, including trailers, from moving or rolling away unintentionally. U-shaped wheel chocks are essential when there is a risk that a parked vehicle will move or roll away. This could be because the vehicle is parked on a slope or uneven ground. Because of alternating forces, vehicles can move in unwanted and hazardous ways during loading and unloading, especially on or off car or truck trailers.
Legal regulations about wheel chocks
§ 41 (14) of the German road traffic regulations (StVO) stipulates that vehicles must be equipped with wheel chocks. The following vehicles must be equipped with at least one wheel chock:
- Motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of over 4 tonnes. This does not include tracked vehicles.
- Twin-axle trailers with a gross weight of over 0.75 tonnes. This does not include semi-trailers, centre-axle trailers and rigid drawbar trailers.
At least two wheel chocks are stipulated for:
- Semi-trailers
- Vehicles with three or more axles
- Rigid drawbar trailers and centre-axle trailers with a gross weight of over 0.75 tonnes.
When the vehicle or trailer is in motion, the wheel chocks must be secured in the vehicle or trailer with holders so that they are easily accessible and won’t rattle. You are not allowed to secure wheel chocks with hooks or chains.
Using wheel chocks
Push the wheel chock behind or under the wheel of the vehicle or trailer. Ensure that the ground is stable and that you push the chock in the right direction. The chock must be positioned so that it prevents any rolling movement. Only unsteered wheels, i.e., wheels that cannot turn to the side, should be secured with chocks. Wheel chocks are not intended to replace the handbrake. If a vehicle has a handbrake or a trailer has a parking brake, it must always be on when the trailer or vehicle is parked. Securing the wheel of a trailer with two chocks can be beneficial during loading and unloading. This will prevent unwanted movement in either direction.
Truck wheel chocks have an additional use. For example, truck wheel chocks are always used to secure the wheels of breakdown trucks when the winch is being used. This prevents the strong pull of the winch from moving the breakdown truck during recovery. For this type of use, we recommend our non-slip rubber wheel chocks.
Wheel chocks for cars, car trailers and truck trailers
Wheel chocks must be able to cope with the load placed on them. For this reason, we stock wheel chocks in various ratings with load specifications:
- Rating 10 – for normal, compact trailers with wheel loads up to 800 kg/wheel
- Rating 36 – for heavy car trailers, vans or motorhomes with wheel loads up to 1600 kg/wheel
- Rating 46 or 53 : suitable for heavy lorries with wheel loads up to 6000 kg/wheel
Plastic or metal wheel chocks
Wheel chocks are available in black or other colours of plastic, or in steel. Both versions are popular. Our metal wheel chocks from AL-KO are made of galvanised sheet steel, so they are very robust and stable. However, their material means that these U-shaped chocks are heavier. By contrast, our plastic wheel chocks are particularly lightweight but still have a long service life thanks to their very robust material. If you are looking for a lightweight and space-saving wheel chock model, then the folding Origamy wheel chock is the perfect choice. This innovative model can save up to 66% on space because it can be folded for storage.
