Vehicle battery tester

ProLux vehicle battery testers reliably check car batteries for correct functioning and voltage. Automotive battery testers not only display the current voltage of the battery, but also check the performance and condition. This means you can immediately make a decision on whether you need to replace the battery. Our digital automotive battery tester with printer also checks the alternator voltage and the starter voltage.

When is a battery tester used?

Automotive battery testers can be found in every car workshop, in every breakdown assistance vehicle, and often in private garages too. Today, the battery in a modern car is subjected to significantly higher loads than in the past, due to the built-in electronics and small electric auxiliary motors. However, short journeys or long periods of inactivity can also cause the battery to run flat. So if the vehicle fails to start, you need to find out what the problem is. A good vehicle battery tester can quickly determine whether the battery is simply flat or whether it is faulty and needs replacing. For batteries that have been severely discharged and no longer provide enough voltage to operate the starter motor, a set of jump leads and a long drive are enough to adequately recharge the car battery.

How battery testers for cars work and how to use them

Our automotive battery testers display the charge level and the current operating status of the car battery. The measured voltage or the charge level of the car battery is displayed precisely and in detail on an analogue scale or digitally on an LCD display.

Our battery testers for cars are very easy to use and provide accurate readings. The two clamps on the automotive battery tester are connected to the two terminals of the starter battery in the car or vehicle. To avoid any confusion, the positive and negative terminals on our battery testers are colour-coded in red and black. The clamps fit the terminals of all standard car batteries. The battery status can then be quickly determined.

The right battery tester for your car battery

We stock two types of tried-and-tested battery testers for cars. Firstly, the very affordable automotive battery testers with an analogue display. And then there are the professional digital battery testers with LCD displays and built-in printers. When it comes to choosing the right device, several factors – such as the intended use – play a crucial role. Below you will find some information and technical details that may be relevant when choosing the right vehicle battery tester.

An analogue vehicle battery tester is ideal for quick, on-the-go use as a battery tester. This automotive battery tester does not require a rechargeable battery or battery cells to operate. It is suitable for measuring voltages of 6 volts (motorbikes) and 12 volts (cars). As soon as you connect the battery tester, a large analogue display shows the current battery voltage. A load test can also be performed. The condition of the car battery can be checked after approximately ten seconds. This means that if the battery readings are poor and a new car battery is required, the issue can be discussed with the customer straight away. In addition, this vehicle battery tester can also check the charging voltage of the alternator. The value for money offered by these analogue vehicle battery testers is unbeatable.

By comparison, digital vehicle battery testers offer more options. Our digital battery tester with printer is ideal for mobile use but is also great for use in the workshop. The advantage of this battery tester is that it can handle different types of batteries. This means that measurements can be taken on standard lead-acid batteries, as well as on AGM, VRLA, and gel batteries. Besides checking the charge level, this battery tester also checks the condition of the battery. In addition, the ignition voltage and the charging voltage of the motor can also be checked. The readings are clearly displayed on the built-in LCD screen. All recorded values can be printed out with the date and a unique, traceable reference number. The test device also provides a recommendation regarding the usability of the battery.

When does a car battery need to be replaced?

The condition of the battery can be determined by measuring the cell voltage. When fully charged, the voltage will reach between 12.8 and 13 V. If the readings are between 12.4 and 12.8 volts, they are adequate, or still within the normal range. At 12.2 volts, the state of charge is approximately 50 per cent. If these values are not reached once the battery is fully charged, or if the voltage is lower, the battery must be replaced. At 10.5 volts, the battery is virtually flat, and if the voltage is any lower than that, it is a sign that the battery is deeply discharged. In most cases, the cells are already damaged by this stage, making it almost impossible to recharge them.

Useful accessories for automotive battery testers

As well as professional battery testers, we also stock useful accessories for engines and car batteries. Using our professional multi-function testers or clamp-on multimeters, you can check, amongst other things, the conductivity of the wiring in the engine compartment.
