Exhaust repair

A vehicle's exhaust is a wear-and-tear part. As a result, an exhaust can easily become damaged whilst driving. This is where our tools come in handy for carrying out quick exhaust repairs. You can use them to repair a leak or a broken exhaust. This means the car can carry on its journey and doesn’t need to be towed straight to a garage.

The exhaust – an important part of any vehicle

The exhaust system in a motor vehicle serves to discharge the engine’s exhaust gases. It is a vital component for engine performance. As well as discharging exhaust gases, the exhaust acts as a silencer for the explosive pressure surges that an internal combustion engine inevitably produces. For some time now, exhaust systems have been fitted as a single unit on new cars. There are no longer any detachable joints in the exhaust pipes. When repairing a hole or a crack in the exhaust pipe, the damaged section of pipe must be cut out. If the exhaust is leaking, exhaust gases from the engine escape too early. This has two consequences: the sound of the silencer gets louder, and the back pressure in the exhaust system changes. As modern vehicles require a perfectly tuned exhaust system to achieve optimum engine performance, a faulty exhaust can have adverse effects on the engine.

Identifying and repairing a defective exhaust

A vehicle’s entire exhaust system is exposed to high temperatures, moisture and corrosive road salt. This corrodes the material of the exhaust pipe. A very small hole or a small crack in the exhaust system often goes unnoticed. However, the corrosion continues to eat away at the hole. The result of this is that the exhaust pipe can suddenly crack or break completely while driving. The loud noise this produces usually makes it easy for the driver to identify the problem. In most cases, the car is still roadworthy even if the exhaust is faulty. However, the hole in the exhaust causes the car's noise level to far exceed the permitted limit. It is illegal to continue driving with a damaged exhaust. To prevent the vehicle from being towed away immediately, ProLux has developed a range of products for carrying out quick repairs to the exhaust system, so you can continue driving. Our heat-resistant exhaust fixing kits make it quick and easy to repair broken exhaust pipes. They can also be used to repair cracks or holes in the connecting pipe or the tailpipe.

                          Essential tools for exhaust repair

If an exhaust pipe has broken, our exhaust repair kit will sort the problem straight away. The kit includes pipe connectors in various diameters, corresponding screw clamps, and sealing paste or assembly paste. Insert the pipe connector into the broken end of the pipe, and push the other end of the pipe onto the connector. Apply a little sealing paste, then secure the repaired break with the clamp using screws – and you’re done. Our exhaust repair paste can also be used to provide a long-lasting seal for small holes in the exhaust system. This means you won’t have to replace an old rear silencer with a new one straight away. Our exhaust repair sleeves, which are available in various sizes, can be used in a similar way. They are inserted into the broken pipe like a pipe connector and then tightened. This results in a secure connection between the two pipe sections. Even pipes that have snapped off directly at the silencer can be repaired using our repair sleeves.

Our pipe cutter is a versatile and useful tool for exhaust repair. It cuts through even the hardest materials, such as steel or stainless steel, with a wall thickness of up to 3 mm. Thanks to its ratchet mechanism, the pipe cutter does not need to be rotated round the exhaust pipe. The built-in cutting edge runs round the round pipe until it is cut through. It can be operated with one hand.
