Operation of a pneumatic jack with compressed air
The operating principle of a pneumatic jack is basically simple. Compressed air is pumped into an air bag. The air pressure causes the bag to inflate and raise the vehicle.
We have two types of pneumatic jacks in our range. First the pneumatic lifting bags or inflatable jacks. With this jack, air is pneumatically blown through a hose into a cylindrical lifting bag made of tear-resistant and rubberised fabric. The air pressure inflates the lifting bag and, for example, raises the car to the desired height. If compressed air or an air compressor is not available, the hose can also be connected to the car exhaust. When using this method, the lifting bag or inflatable jack is filled with exhaust gases. Once the vehicle has been raised, the necessary repairs can be carried out. Its large diameter means that this type of air jack is also suitable for use on soft ground. Damage to the raised car can usually be avoided because the pressure is spread out over a larger surface area. The low profile of this pneumatic jack means that even lowered cars can be raised without any problems. Pneumatic lifting bags are therefore a cost-effective and simple method for raising cars. Our version has a maximum lift height of 750 mm and is often used as easy-to-stow emergency equipment.
The other type of pneumatic jack in our range is our air jack. These professional jacks are much more robust than the inflatable jacks described above. With this type of air jack, compressed air is blown into the two or three ring-shaped air bags that sit one on top of the other. However, these pneumatic jacks are fitted with a stable stand at the bottom and lifting plate at the top. They therefore work as pneumatic bottle jacks. With an air pressure of 8 bar, these pneumatic jacks can raise a maximum weight of 2.5 tonnes. The compressed air is either taken from an air tank in the vehicle or generated with an air compressor. Very lightweight and small air compressors are ideal for mobile use alongside our pneumatic jacks. The maximum lift height that can be achieved is 465 mm. Raising cars or other vehicles in this way allows the user sufficient space for carrying out repairs or maintenance.
Pneumatic jack compared to hydraulic jack
The basic difference between a pneumatic jack and a hydraulic jack is how the pressure is generated and how the pressure builds up. Hydraulic jacks almost always use oil to generate pressure. This allows very high lifting capacities. The pressure needed to achieve the maximum lifting capacity is generated by a pump. The pump is operated manually by moving the pump lever up and down. This requires muscle strength and a bit of time. Pneumatic jacks are filled with compressed air. The air is supplied by an air reservoir or, most often, a compressor. This means the task is straightforward and effortless for the user, but it does require access to compressed air of up to 8 bar.
In summary, if compressed air is readily available, our pneumatic jacks are a great choice. These jacks require minimal effort and are quick to use. The pneumatic lifting bags are advantageous when dealing with lowered cars and for use on soft ground. On the other hand, a 2-bag or 3-bag air jack can be positioned and raised quickly. Both types of pneumatic jack have practical lift heights and are suitable for mobile applications. However, due to the limited lifting capacity they are not suitable as HGV jacks.
If you are looking for a high load lifting capacity, then you should consider a hydraulic bottle jack. These jacks have a maximum lifting capacity of up to 30 tonnes. The disadvantages compared to pneumatic jacks are the relatively high shoulder height, limited lift heights and the muscle power required to use them. Trolley jacks offer something slightly different again. Trolley jacks also have a limited maximum lifting capacity, however, they have low entry heights and high lift heights.
