The difference between a pulling winch and a hoisting winch
The difference between a pulling winch and a winch for lifting lies primarily in their intended use and design:
Hoist winches are specifically designed for the vertical lifting and lowering of loads. For safety reasons, they must not have a drum freewheel, but are equipped with suitable brakes and safety mechanisms to hold loads securely in position. The braking mechanism must be robust enough to withstand any sudden movements of the load (e.g. due to a jerky pendulum motion). Under certain conditions, lifting winches can also pull horizontally.
Towing winches, on the other hand, are suitable for the horizontal pulling of loads and are only approved for this purpose. They almost always have a drum freewheel (for rapid retraction of the tow rope). A braking device is also fitted, which holds the load in place if the pulling process is interrupted.
