          What is a torque wrench and what is it used for?

          A torque wrench is a manually operated screwdriving tool used to tighten bolts or nuts to a specified torque. A torque wrench is a manually operated hand tool designed to tighten nuts and bolts to a precisely specified tightening torque. The required torque value can be set in newton metres (Nm) before use. You can also preset the desired maximum tightening force. This is important e.g. for wheel nuts, which require a specific tightening force. It is also useful in other cases where a specific tightening force should not be exceeded. The torque wrench clicks to indicate that the desired torque has been reached.

          5-25 Nm torque wrench for bicycles + motorbikes

          Our 1/4-inch torque wrench is ideal for securely tightening bolts on bicycles and motorbikes. Bicycles have a smaller number of bolted joints, which are tightened to relatively low torque values. With modern, expensive carbon-fibre bikes, small torque wrenches are absolutely essential, as applying excessive torque to the carbon-fibre frame can cause irreparable damage.

          Motorcycles feature a larger number of screw connections, which almost always have a specified tightening torque of between 5 and 25 Nm. As space is sometimes very limited, we also recommend our small 1/4'' torque wrench, which requires minimal handling space. If you have a 1/4" torque wrench with a range of 5-25 Nm, you are covered for almost any situation.

           

          Torque wrenches for cars

          For cars and vans, we recommend our 1/2-inch torque wrenches. These come in torque ranges of 20-120 Nm and 40-220 Nm. For passenger cars, the required tightening torques range from 40 to 150 Nm (threads between M10 × 1.25 and M14 × 1.5). Large SUVs or vans in the 3.5t range may also require up to 200 Nm. A 40-220 Nm torque wrench covers almost all applications for passenger cars.

          200-800 Nm torque wrench: This professional torque wrench is used when very high tightening torques are required. For example, in workshops for trucks, construction machinery, or large agricultural machinery. These very high torques are also frequently required for industrial applications.

          How does a torque wrench work?

          A torque wrench operates on the principle of controlled force transmission to prevent damage and material overload in bolted joints. To do this, it measures the torque acting on a bolt or nut and ensures that this torque is maintained precisely. Before use, the desired value is set on the handle of the wrench, and as soon as this torque is reached when tightening, the tool emits an audible and perceptible click.

          Correct use of Newton-meter torque wrenches

          The following should be observed when using a torque wrench:

          • Adjust the torque. Select the appropriate wrench and set it exactly to the torque specified by the manufacturer.
          • Select the attachment. Securely attach the appropriate socket to the wrench. When tightening the screw connection, the nut or bolt and the thread must be clean.
          • Position and tighten. Seat the wrench directly on the bolt. It must be aligned parallel to the bolt plane. Now tighten the bolt slowly and evenly until the wrench clicks to indicate that the set torque has been reached.
          • Remove the tool and release the tension. Once the tool clicks, do not tighten any further! This can overload the bolt. After use, set your tool to the lowest setting to extend its lifespan and maintain accuracy.

          Do not use the wrench to loosen screws and remember to calibrate (adjust) it regularly.
