What is a wheel lock nut?

Wheel lock nuts are widely used to protect expensive aluminium rims from theft. They are special wheel bolts or wheel nuts that have a unique pattern. Unlike conventional wheel bolts, they can only be loosened using the appropriate socket wrench, known as a locking wheel nut key. This makes it considerably more difficult for thieves to remove the wheels, as they cannot easily access the tyres without the specific key.

What is a wheel lock nut removal kit?

A wheel lock nut removal kit is a set of tools specifically designed to remove wheel lock nuts when the original key is no longer available. These kits often contain various attachments and tools to "open" a wide variety of wheel lock nuts – hence why they are colloquially often called "lug nut keys". They are a last resort for workshops and tyre professionals, but also for experienced car owners who face the problem of having to loosen their wheel lock nut without a key.

Different types of wheel lock removal tools

To remove wheel lock nuts without the original key, there are a range of different technical solutions when it comes to wheel lock removal tools.

        • Special nuts with left-hand thread: These use sockets with a conical internal toothing and left-hand thread in order to be able to grip the wheel lock nut to loosen it.
        • Deformable nuts: This system uses deformable socket nuts which are hammered into place so that they adapt to the shape of the wheel lock nut and become securely anchored on it. The lock can then be turned and released using a suitable tool.

Choosing the right wheel lock nut tool depends largely on the type of wheel lock nut installed.

Applications of a locking wheel nut key

A locking wheel nut remover is used whenever the correct key for a wheel lock nut has been lost, is defective, or the wheel lock nut itself has been damaged and can no longer be removed. Typical applications for a locking wheel nut remover are:

        • Tyre changing: For example, if a damaged tyre needs to be changed and the correct key is missing.
        • Wheel changing: If the wheel lock nuts on the old rims cannot be loosened.
        • Maintenance work: When repairs, e.g. to the chassis or brakes, require the wheels to be removed.

Tips for using a wheel lock removal tool

Removing a wheel lock nut requires some care and a practiced technique to avoid damaging the lock nut:

        • Choose the right wheel nut removal tool: It is vital to select the appropriate removal tool depending on the type of wheel lock nut. If the lock is already damaged, a left-hand thread extractor or an impact socket is often suitable.
        • Select the appropriate attachment: Choose the appropriate size and attach it to the wheel lock nut. Work carefully: With impact sockets, the tool is secured in place by striking it with a hammer.
        • Work carefully: With impact sockets, the tool is secured in place by striking it with a hammer. Avoid using excessive force, as this can cause slipping or damage to the rim.
        • Open the lock carefully: Using a suitable turning tool, carefully open the lock by turning anti-clockwise. If the lock is very stuck, some rust remover can also help.
        • Check the lock: After removing the wheel lock nut, the threads should be checked and cleaned. If it was damaged during removal, it should be replaced.
