Winch cables

A winch cable used with cable winches can have different properties. Made from steel with diameters from 5 to 24 mm, or from synthetic fibre with diameters from 6 to 18 mm, there is a cable for every purpose. Cable lengths start at 10 m and usually end at 50 m. Special lengths are also available. Novoleen is a name you frequently hear in relation to winch cables. This is an extremely strong high-tech fibre. Various splicing methods are used to make the cable extremely robust.

Steel winch cable:

Winch cables are frequently made from steel, as this material is highly stable and facilitates a high cable force. The galvanised steel cables are pre-assembled, either with an integrated safety hook with closed lug or with a swivel hook, which prevents twisting. There are also highly compressed steel cables with a high minimum breaking force. These cables are very stiff and are difficult to wind around the cable drum. Cables have to be replaced if more than 3 wires along a length of 50 mm or more than 6 wires along a length of 200 mm are broken, likewise if there are deformations that reduce the diameter by 10 %. Wire cables comply with EN 12385-4 and fulfil the required dual safety aspect for electrical and hydraulic cable winches in accordance with European Standard EN 14492-1. The rotation-resistant wire cables are used universally for winches, cranes, lifts and slings.


Synthetic winch rope:

Winch cables are also made from synthetic materials. High-tech Novoleen fibre ropes are resilient like a wire cable, but up to 14 times lighter. Synthetic ropes are made from polyethylene and have a safety hook at one end that sits in a stainless steel thimble, reducing wear on the lug. Synthetic hauling ropes and the matching hauling rope extensions are extremely flexible with low elasticity. In this cable the external properties of the Novoleen fibres are paired with a 12-strand braid. We recommend Novoleen lines in the stopper or gripping area, equipped with a threaded and sewed-on protective hose as needed, to improve handling and durability.

Winch cables must be replaced if a strand is broken or so many threads are chafed that it amounts to a strand. Synthetic cables are used universally and are preferred in winches for forestry work, on off-road 4x4 vehicles, and for sailing.


Good to know: the minimum breaking force of a winch cable alters depending on its diameter. With a diameter of 8 mm galvanised steel cable DIN 3059, 1960 N/mm², design 6x19 strands maximum 4550 kg achieved; a maximum of 5000 kg achieved with synthetic cable of the same diameter. Two materials are used in the manufacture of winch cables.
